Messages Queued For Submission

Got this alert on a SCOM 2012 server:

Mail Submission Service is experiencing issues: Messages Queued For Submission.

Reading the Technet article wasn’t really helpful so I’ve decided to debug the issue myself.

The counter that was reported to be causing all the trouble is “Messages Queued For Submission” and the alert in SCOM also pointed me to the affected server.

When I viewed the counter stats in Performance Monitor I did noticed that one DB was causing all the trouble, but I couldn’t figure out what was the cause of that. After searching the web a bit I found the following command:

Get-Mailbox -Server SERVERNAME | Get-MailboxFolderStatistics | Where-Object {$_.Name -eq “Outbox” -and $_.ItemsInFolder -gt “0”}

I ran this command on the affected server and the output was a list of all the users mailboxes that had at least one item in the “Outbox” folder. I reviewed the list and noticed 2 users that had over 600 items in “Outbox”. Each!

Once I removed those items (to a temp folder under the “Inbox”) the counter dropped to 0! And the alert was gone 🙂
